Who We Are

Evignettehungary.com is operated by Maut & Vignette B.V., headquartered in Amersfoort, the Netherlands. We also have a second office in Brussels, Belgium, as well as remote team members based across Europe.

Our story begins in 2014, when we were still selling physical paper vignette stickers. As Hungary expanded its digital e-Matrica registration system that same year, we built a dedicated platform to make the process easier for international drivers who might otherwise struggle with language barriers, vehicle classifications, or local toll rules.

Since then, our team has grown to over 50 people managing toll and transit platforms across Europe.

Mattijs co-founded the company in 2014, when it was originally registered as Moonshots Online Marketing. The idea grew out of his own experiences driving abroad. During a road trip through Hungary in 2008, he received a substantial fine because his rental vehicle didn't have the required sticker vignette. A few years later, he ran into similar confusion while trying to work out how to obtain a German emissions sticker before visiting family in Wiesbaden. Those experiences made one thing clear: cross-border driving rules can be unnecessarily difficult for people who are unfamiliar with the local system. Today, Mattijs still regularly drives Central Europe's main transit routes to see how toll systems work in practice and to test the information we provide to customers. His most recent trip through Hungary was in April 2026.

What We Saw on Our Recent Trips Through Hungary

During our 2026 trip across Hungary's motorway network, we documented conditions along four of the country's most important transit corridors:

M1 Motorway (Hegyeshalom / Austrian Border)

This is the main route into Hungary from Vienna. We noticed that NÚSZ camera gantries are active immediately after the border point. Although there are no routine fixed border controls within the Schengen Area, drivers may still encounter mobile police checks and heavy weekend congestion is common.

M85 Motorway (Sopron / Austrian Border)

The M85 can be a useful alternative when traffic on the M1 is heavy. Near Sopron, drivers transition from the motorway to regional roads before reaching the Austrian border.

M43 Motorway (Szeged to Nagylak / Csanádpalota Crossing)

A 57 km route connecting the M5 to Romania, heavily used by commercial freight. Speed limits drop rapidly to 40 km/h near the border crossing. Drivers continuing onto Romania's A1 towards Arad also need a valid rovinieta. (Note: Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes must use Hungary's distance-based HU-GO tolling system rather than an e-vignette.)

M4 Motorway (Nagykereki to Borș Crossing)

This is a quieter route towards Oradea in eastern Romania. Overhead toll cameras automatically check vehicle registrations, allowing passenger traffic to move through without stopping.

Editorial & Accuracy Standards

We use a combination of first-hand testing, official sources, and customer feedback to keep our route and toll information accurate.

  1. Field Testing

We drive the routes ourselves to check signage, lane changes, border setups, and toll infrastructure.

  2. Official Verification

Rule changes, and toll prices are cross-checked against official Hungarian sources, including nemzetiutdij.hu.

  3. Regular Audits

Our content is reviewed every 30 days so that changes to pricing, toll rules, and vehicle categories are reflected quickly.

  4. Driver Feedback

Real-world inquiries and route experiences submitted to our customer support team help us identify unclear rules, common mistakes, and the topics that need further explanation in our FAQs.
